Maria Lai. Sewing Up the World
2015
The volume “Ricucire il mondo” (Sewing up the World) is dedicated to Maria Lai (1919-2013), one of the most original and fascinating artists of the second half of the 20th century.
The protagonist of an unprecedented creative journey, Maria Lai wove the threads of multiple geographies, where childhood and universal stories, local stories, of her Sardinia, and planetary stories, intertwine into one great tale.
The catalogue of the exhibitions in Cagliari, Nuoro and Ulassai retraces the stages of his extraordinary journey, from his beginnings in the early 1940s, with his drawings and tempera paintings dedicated to women’s work, his objects inspired by weaving (Blackboards, Stitched Books, Geographies), to the creation of Breads, Cribs and Looms during the 1970s.
Ample space is also given to the reflections that matured from the 1980s onwards, a period of great renewal that saw her engaged in an action of public involvement through the realisation of site-specific works, collective actions, performances, theatrical writings.
A tribute to an artist who has been able to stitch together a stratified and millenary world with new scenarios, overcoming borders and frontiers that are often only imaginary.
