Alberto Giacometti. A Step Away from Time
in “Alberto Giacometti e l’arcaico”
2014
Edited by Pietro Bellasi and Chiara Gatti
A meticulous and poetic journey, a ‘subtle investigation’, of which self-representation is a fundamental aspect.
The book is dedicated to the great Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), of whom it is intended to highlight a suggestive aspect of his work.
“All the art of the past, of all epochs, of all civilisations, appeared before me. Everything was simultaneous, as if space had taken the place of time’. This extraordinary confession gave rise to the idea of investigating the great fascination that statuary from ancient times, whether Egyptian and Etruscan, Greek, Sumerian or African, exerted in the eyes of the 20th century master.
The famous slender and long-linear sculptures of walking figures, carved out of the material like archaeological finds, are brought together with real exhibits from the best Italian museums of ancient art – from Egyptian statuettes to Etruscan figures, from Nuragic bronzes to art nègre masterpieces – with the intention of restoring to the master’s masterpieces their dimension of eternity, which is still striking today.
A fascinating journey through time and space, for a better understanding of the work of this great 20th century artist.
